This two-story, 131,650 sq. ft. facility is designed not only to provide shelter but also to offer hope, stability, and opportunity for Indigenous youth aged 18-29 who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. As we reflect on the progress made in 2024, we want to share the story of this impactful project and what it means for the community it serves.
For Renokrew, it’s a reminder that when we come together with a shared commitment, with creativity, and with heart – construction can be a force for real change!
We know that true construction excellence goes beyond erecting buildings, it’s about shaping communities and creating environments where people are empowered to thrive. Our work on the Indigenous Youth Transitional Housing Project in Thunder Bay exemplifies this mission. This isn’t just a construction project; it’s a transformative investment in the future of Indigenous youth in Ontario.

2024: A Year of Milestones and Momentum
The journey began in January 2024 with site clearing and groundwork. Despite some early delays due to various soil challenges, our team quickly regained momentum:
-
- January 2024: Groundbreaking efforts with site clearing and preliminary groundwork.
-
- May 31, 2024: We began forming the footings, followed by weeks of pouring concrete for foundations and walls.
-
- July 2024: Phase 1 framing commenced alongside the installation of hollow-core slabs.
-
- November 2024: The team received shipments of glulam beams and timbers, marking a significant step forward in construction.
-
- December 2024: Phase 3 framing is nearing completion, with windows and interior work progressing steadily.
This relentless progress reflects not just technical expertise but also the dedication and teamwork of everyone on-site.

A Facility Built with Purpose
The Indigenous Youth Transitional Housing Project is more than a physical structure; it’s a safe haven where young people can reclaim their independence and reconnect with their cultural roots.

Core Components of the Project:
-
- Individualized Support: Services tailored to help youth navigate adult systems and secure stable housing.
-
- Cultural Focus: A design rooted in Indigenous traditions, supporting trauma-informed care that doesn’t just acknowledge but embraces culture.
-
- Holistic Care: Resources for food security, mental health support, transportation, and more. The goal? To eliminate barriers and create an environment that fosters independence.
And because we’re building with future generations in mind, we’ve chosen mass timber and sustainable materials that respect the environment. It’s a nod to the community’s values and a step towards a greener future.

Building Hope for the Future
Every project we take on leaves its mark. But this one? It’s different. For the youth who will call this place home, it represents a shift from surviving to thriving. It’s a chance to build a better future.
Through this project, Youth Outreach Workers will provide critical advocacy and system navigation, helping residents access mental health resources, cultural supports, and education opportunities. These efforts are designed to foster healing and self-reliance, ensuring that every individual has the tools they need to transition into adulthood successfully.
Looking Ahead: 2025 and Beyond
As we move into 2025, our eyes are set on the finish line, with plans to complete the project by Q4. The final stages will see the last details come to life, from drywall installations to those finishing touches that make a space welcoming and functional.
But our work goes beyond construction. This project is a testament to what’s possible when communities, Ontario Aboriginal Housing Services, architects FormStudio Architects Inc., and construction teams Renokrew come together with a shared vision.
